HME Mechanic – Barrick

Barrick is seeking a qualified HME Mechanic to join its Africa Middle East Team in Shinyanga, Tanzania. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out mechanical repairs, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and fault finding on heavy mobile equipment while maintaining high standards of safety and equipment performance.

The role requires practical experience in diesel and hydraulic mechanics, familiarity with heavy mobile equipment, and the ability to perform maintenance activities efficiently. Candidates with relevant trade certification, mining experience, and strong technical troubleshooting skills are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities include:

• Follow safe work practices, attend compulsory safety courses and meetings, use required PPE, report incidents and accidents, and comply with all Safety, Occupational Health and Environmental requirements.
• Follow maintenance procedures and complete mechanical activities according to required standards.
• Ensure proper equipment isolation and comply with working-at-height and confined-space procedures.
• Conduct pre-start checks and equipment inspections.
• Carry out mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance on heavy mobile equipment.
• Perform troubleshooting, fault finding, and corrective maintenance to resolve equipment breakdowns.
• Maintain maximum equipment availability through effective maintenance practices.
• Use work instructions, job sheets, and required resource information to determine maintenance requirements.
• Perform preventive maintenance inspections and ensure compliance with scheduled maintenance requirements.
• Conduct mobile and plant equipment upgrades and modifications when required.
• Remove and replace engines, transmissions, torque converters, final drives, differentials, hydraulic pumps, and other components.
• Provide accurate and timely feedback to the Heavy Mobile Equipment Supervisor regarding equipment conditions.
• Keep the Heavy Mobile Equipment Supervisor and relevant stakeholders informed about equipment availability.
• Identify required mechanical equipment and resources and select and inspect appropriate tools.
• Follow up on outstanding maintenance activities and repairs.
• Participate actively in training activities to develop technical skills.
• Provide appropriate on-the-job training under the direction of the Heavy Mobile Equipment Supervisor.
• Strip and assemble surface heavy mobile equipment.
• Maintain a clean, neat, and organised heavy mobile equipment workshop.
• Perform preventive maintenance service inspections according to maintenance requirements.
• Comply with work orders, job specifications, and resource identification and inspection requirements.

Qualifications and Requirements:

• Secondary education.
• Diesel Mechanics Trade Certification.
• Full Technician’s Certificate.
• VETA Grade One.
• Valid Tanzania Driving Licence Class D.
• Valid Tanzania Driving Licence Class F is an added advantage.
• Technical or vocational school training.
• Apprenticeship training.
• On-the-job training, including FTC, VETA, IMTT Trade Test, or equivalent.
• 2–3 years of experience in a maintenance role involving basic hydraulic and diesel mechanics.
• Experience in the mining industry.
• Familiarity with heavy mobile equipment and workshop activities.
• Knowledge of troubleshooting hydraulic and mechanical systems using schematic diagrams or CAT SIS.
• Experience with mobile equipment fault finding using SIS and CAT ET diagnostic software.
• Ability to provide technical support services without direct supervision.
• Strong time management and planning skills.
• Strong analytical and logical thinking skills.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• Clear and concise oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to operate a variety of tools and equipment safely and effectively.
• Ability to conduct safety inspections and identify workplace hazards.
• Good vision and ability to identify different colours and symbols.
