Senior Analyst – Client Origination at NMB Bank Plc

NMB Bank Plc is inviting applications from qualified and experienced professionals for the position of Senior Analyst – Client Origination in Dar es Salaam. The role focuses on evaluating counterparty credit risks associated with Wholesale Banking lending while supporting the origination and execution of transactions within acceptable risk parameters.

The successful candidate will work closely with Relationship Managers, Credit Originators, clients, structured trade finance teams, and co-financiers. The position also involves assessing complex business proposals, preparing and presenting credit applications, monitoring portfolio quality, and supporting the syndication and co-financing of sovereign and non-sovereign borrowing customers.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist credit evaluation services at the customer interface and assess client applications within agreed turnaround times.
  • Identify credit and risk management requirements at the early stages of deal negotiations and business proposals.
  • Conduct credit evaluation discussions with clients during negotiations to obtain sufficient information for assessing business risk and deal viability.
  • Identify non-viable transactions at an early stage and work with relevant stakeholders to explore alternatives that fit acceptable risk and profitability parameters.
  • Support the development of high-quality credit solutions and recommend appropriate facilities based on credit risk assessments.
  • Present and explain credit judgements and evaluations to clients while maintaining strong business relationships.
  • Identify, quantify, and evaluate risks associated with business proposals and their potential impact on profitability and overall corporate financial viability.
  • Analyse available information to understand the business factors that create value or profitability and the risks associated with them.
  • Use industry risk analysis to identify contextual risks affecting existing and prospective clients.
  • Assess whether business proposals meet sound commercial criteria and whether counterparty credit risk falls within acceptable limits.
  • Recommend appropriate credit facilities, including suitable terms and conditions.
  • Prepare credit applications with sound financial and business justification for proposed transactions.
  • Present and defend credit proposals before Management and Board Credit Committees when seeking approval.
  • Process credit applications for existing facilities accurately and within agreed turnaround times.
  • Monitor changes in key business or industry parameters and assess their potential impact on existing relationships.
  • Analyse information received from clients and assess their financial and business performance.
  • Investigate reasons for risk exposure above approved credit facilities and evaluate the associated business risks.
  • Monitor excess utilisation and arrears on credit facilities and support Relationship Managers in managing risk exposure.
  • Review customers’ financial and non-financial information and advise Relationship Managers and clients on required revisions before processing facilities.
  • Verify financial statements, Risk Return Based Pricing information, Risk Grading calculations, and other data before submission to decision-makers.
  • Build strong working relationships with Credit Originators and Relationship Managers to improve proposal quality and credit evaluation turnaround times.
  • Share credit responsibility with the business team while maintaining appropriate risk oversight.
  • Ensure the Wholesale Banking team has access to timely and effective credit evaluation support.
  • Identify risks and barriers arising from clients’ operating environments and develop appropriate mitigation strategies with relevant stakeholders.
  • Monitor portfolio quality using Conditions of Sanction triggers where applicable.
  • Discuss deteriorating trends and significant trigger events with sanctioning authorities and advise the relevant Relationship Manager.
  • Plan and implement annual credit reviews for the assigned portfolio.
  • Monitor daily referrals and ensure customer facilities remain within approved parameters.
  • Exercise appropriate discretion regarding account conduct based on a detailed understanding of client activities.
  • Coach Relationship Managers and members of the credit origination team on credit and day-to-day work requirements.
  • Maintain open and effective communication within the team.
  • Keep the Bank informed about clients’ existing businesses, potential opportunities, risks, and changing personal and business needs.

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • At least 4 years of experience in credit origination or credit evaluation.
  • Experience in project structuring, financial modelling, financial validation, and reviewing financial statements.
  • Strong knowledge of key areas of Wholesale Banking.
  • Understanding of key financial indicators and the use of financial analysis to evaluate strategic options and business opportunities.
  • Robust knowledge of credit principles and risk assessment.
  • Strong ability to build effective relationships and credibility with colleagues, stakeholders, and customers.
  • Ability to identify, define, clarify, and work through complex challenges toward practical outcomes.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to develop integrated solutions using logical, rational, and sound judgement.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong listening, information-interrogation, and interpretation abilities.
  • Ability to strategically influence stakeholders across the organization.
  • Advanced negotiation skills.
  • A Master’s degree in Business Studies is an added advantage.
  • Postgraduate education in Banking and/or relevant banking certification is an added advantage.
