Standard Bank Group is inviting applications for the position of Legal Officer in Dar es Salaam. This is a full-time opportunity for a qualified legal professional with experience in providing legal advice, drafting and negotiating agreements, legal administration, and supporting business operations within the legal or financial services environment.

The Legal Officer will provide legal guidance to internal stakeholders, review and prepare legal documentation, and support business teams in implementing instructions in accordance with approved processes and policies. The role also focuses on mitigating legal and business risks through appropriate due diligence and effective management of legal documentation.

About the Role

The Legal Officer will provide basic and standard legal advice to internal stakeholders and assist with the interpretation and implementation of business instructions using approved legal templates. The successful candidate will work closely with other members of the Legal team when reviewing and providing input on legal documentation.

The position also involves supporting the full contract lifecycle, managing commercial agreements, conducting legal research, maintaining legal records, and providing training to Business Units on legal documentation, developments, and legal issues.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice throughout the contract lifecycle, including template standardization, review, drafting, negotiation, execution, and renewal.
  • Prepare and manage commercial agreements, including commercial contracts, leases, and vendor contracts.
  • Review legal documentation and provide appropriate input in collaboration with other Legal team members.
  • Support the structuring, negotiation, and drafting of legal agreements and documentation.
  • Conduct appropriate due diligence to help mitigate legal and business risks.
  • Provide training to Business Units on legal documentation, legal developments, and legal issues.
  • Ensure legal documentation is managed in accordance with approved processes and policies.
  • Maintain appropriate legal records and documentation.
  • Conduct legal research to support business and legal requirements.
  • Manage assigned legal tasks and ensure they are completed within required timelines.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law.
  • 5–7 years of proven experience providing basic legal advice, preferably within the legal and/or financial sectors.
  • Good understanding of relevant banking products and services.
  • Ability to assist in structuring, negotiating, and drafting legal agreements and documentation.
  • Strong ability to articulate information clearly.
  • Good attention to detail and ability to check documents and information carefully.
  • Ability to document facts accurately.
  • Strong relationship-building and rapport skills.
