NMB Bank Plc is seeking a qualified and experienced banking professional for the position of Relationship Manager Institutional Banking in the Southern Zone. The role focuses on growing and retaining a portfolio of institutional clients from both government and private institutions while providing tailored financial solutions that support their business and operational needs.
The successful candidate will manage institutional relationships, identify new business opportunities, support credit activities, and coordinate with internal teams to deliver banking solutions. The position also requires strong knowledge of institutional banking, relationship management, financial analysis, regulatory compliance, and portfolio management.
Responsibilities
- Manage existing institutional customer relationships through regular communication and client visits.
- Understand customer banking requirements and ensure their needs are addressed accurately and within agreed timelines.
- Work with product teams and internal departments to develop clear account plans based on client needs.
- Provide suitable financial solutions across relevant banking products by leveraging the Bank’s network, balance sheet, brand, and other capabilities.
- Identify and develop a target pipeline of profitable institutional customers.
- Market banking solutions to prospective institutional clients and identify cross-selling opportunities.
- Gather information required to prepare and assess credit applications while managing customer expectations.
- Develop prudently priced assets and cost-effective long-term liabilities with reputable institutions and organizations.
- Identify and take ownership of sales leads generated through Corporate Banking, Business Banking, Retail Banking, and other ecosystem channels.
- Coordinate with product partners to ensure required work standards and quality targets are achieved and maintained.
- Deliver quality customer service, competitive pricing, effective onboarding, and advisory support to new and existing institutional customers.
- Act as a link between customers, client service teams, back-office service fulfilment teams, and credit functions.
- Engage regularly with clients to understand their changing financial requirements and provide appropriate support.
- Process customer mandates and documentation requirements for financial facilities accurately and efficiently.
- Analyse customer data to identify opportunities for business expansion and additional banking services.
- Develop and maintain a structured client-calling schedule covering all customers within the assigned portfolio.
- Monitor regulatory compliance requirements, including KYC and Control Self-Assessment, and address root causes of identified issues.
- Maintain a high-quality asset book while supporting strong portfolio performance and returns.
- Manage client portfolios in line with regulatory requirements and the Bank’s policies and procedures to reduce financial loss and fraud risks.
- Maintain strong operational controls and comply with Risk Management and Compliance requirements.
- Promote NMB values and the Bank’s code of conduct while maintaining high ethical standards.
- Work with Risk, Credit, Legal, and Compliance teams to ensure the portfolio remains creditworthy and within approved Bank policies.
- Manage the Institutional Banking liability and loan portfolio within the Bank’s risk appetite.
- Prepare quality credit applications for submission to the relevant credit committee.
- Support the growth of a quality credit portfolio and a sustainable, self-funded wholesale banking balance sheet.
- Ensure proper record keeping for all documents submitted by institutional customers.
Qualifications Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Business Administration, Finance, Marketing, Statistics, Research, or a related field.
- A Master’s degree in Business Studies is an added advantage.
- Postgraduate education in Banking and/or relevant banking certification is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in Relationship Management, particularly managing government and other public-sector clients.
- Knowledge of general banking practices, policies, procedures, and the regulatory environment.
- Current understanding of different industry sectors and sector-specific risks and trends.
- Strong understanding of institutional banking competitors, their products, market position, strengths, vulnerabilities, market share, and client base.
- Broad and detailed technical knowledge of Institutional Banking practices and procedures.
- Strong customer relationship management skills and understanding of banking products, policies, and procedures.
- Strong analytical ability, including identifying patterns and trends and understanding relationships between causes and outcomes.
- Fluency in both written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
- Strong numerical and financial analysis skills, including the ability to assess complex financial statements, balance sheets, and financial ratios.
- Strong persuasion, negotiation, and business development skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
