Data Engineer at Kenya Airways PLC

Kenya Airways PLC is seeking a skilled Data Engineer to support its Data Science & Analytics function. Reporting to the Senior Manager – Data Science & Analytics, the successful candidate will help design reliable data infrastructure, develop data pipelines, combine data sources, and build data assets that support business intelligence and advanced analytics.

The position requires strong technical knowledge of data engineering, cloud technologies, SQL, Python, data modelling, and workflow automation. The successful candidate will also work closely with business analysts and data science teams to understand requirements and develop reliable solutions that improve data processing and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities include:

• Assist with quality control of quantitative and qualitative research projects.
• Design, build, and support data processing pipelines using cloud technologies such as AWS, Azure, and GCP.
• Work with business analysts to understand business requirements and data use cases.
• Develop and execute quality assurance procedures and test scripts.
• Build survey and voter file data pipelines.
• Design and build data assets using cloud solutions and/or Oracle ODI.
• Design and develop internal tools that simplify complex task flows.
• Design schemas, data models, and data architectures for cloud environments.
• Implement data flow scripts using Unix and scripting technologies.
• Create scripts and workflows that automate repetitive data processing tasks.
• Work with the wider data team to identify opportunities for automation and the development of useful internal tools.

Qualifications required:

• Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Actuarial Science, Information Systems, Economics, Statistics, or another related quantitative field.
• Experience and knowledge of programming languages such as Python.
• Good knowledge and practical experience using SQL query language.
• Understanding of star schemas and data warehouse concepts.
• Knowledge of AWS, Azure, and related cloud technologies.
• Experience with ETL and ELT processes, including batch and microservices-led approaches, is an added advantage.
• At least three years of experience working as a Data Engineer or in a similar role.
• Experience using data pipeline and workflow management tools such as Airflow.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across regional teams.
• Ability to take ownership of assigned work, meet deadlines, and support other team members with their deliverables.
• Ability to identify practical solutions and simplify complex technical challenges.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to break down complex problems into manageable solutions.
