Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) has announced 20 Research Assistant positions under the Acute Care Transformation through Basic Emergency Care (ACTxBEC) Evaluation Project. The positions are available to suitably qualified Tanzanian applicants who have experience or training in clinical medicine, nursing, health data collection, clinical research or related areas.

The ACTxBEC project is funded by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Prime Minister's Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), MUHAS, the Emergency Medicine Association of Tanzania (EMAT), and other national and international partners. The study will evaluate the implementation and impact of the ACTxBEC education bundle in selected district hospitals and health centres across Tanzania.

About the ACTxBEC Project

The Acute Care Transformation through Basic Emergency Care (ACTxBEC) Initiative combines the WHO Basic Emergency Care (BEC) course with the Sustainable Simulation and Skills (S3) workplace-based training programme.

The Tanzania component will use a stepped-wedge cluster-randomised implementation design. The research will assess the implementation of the training programme among participating healthcare workers and examine patient outcomes using clinical data collected from selected healthcare facilities.

Research Assistant – 20 Positions

The Research Assistants will support patient screening, clinical data collection, data management and other research activities at participating healthcare facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Screen patients presenting with eligible sentinel conditions and identify study participants according to the research protocol and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Collect, enter and update clinical study data accurately and within the required timelines using the WHO Integrated Data Platform (WIDP).
  • Follow enrolled patients throughout their hospital stay and document clinical outcomes and final disposition.
  • Review study records for completeness and accuracy and help resolve data queries.
  • Participate in routine data quality checks to maintain the integrity of study information.
  • Maintain secure and confidential research records in accordance with ethical requirements and study procedures.
  • Support study implementation by assisting Facility Champions and healthcare workers with access to the WIDP and S3 platforms.
  • Provide basic technical troubleshooting support when required.
  • Prepare routine study reports.
  • Participate in project meetings, training sessions and other research activities.
  • Perform other study-related duties assigned by the Study Coordinator or Principal Investigators.

Skills and Experience

Applicants should have the following skills and experience:

  • Strong organizational, data management and problem-solving skills.
  • High levels of integrity and professionalism.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality when handling patient and research information.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience using electronic data capture systems.
  • At least one year of experience in clinical research, health data collection, monitoring and evaluation, or a related health programme.
  • Experience using electronic data collection platforms.
  • Experience with tablet-based data collection will be an added advantage.
  • Ability to accurately review medical records and collect clinical information according to study protocols and SOPs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with healthcare workers, research teams and health facility staff.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends.
  • Willingness to travel to participating study sites when required.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must meet the following academic and professional requirements:

  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine or Diploma in Nursing.
  • Completion of internship.
  • Registration with a recognized professional council.

  • Applicants must provide details of three reputable referees with reliable contact information.
  • Certificates issued by foreign examination bodies for Ordinary or Advanced Level education must be verified by the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA).
  • Certificates from foreign universities and other training institutions must be verified by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) or the National Council for Technical Education (NACTVET/NACTE), as applicable.
  • Foreign university certificates should have the GPA calculated on a five-point scale by TCU where required.
  • The application letter should be signed and written in either English or Swahili.
  • Forged certificates or false information may result in legal action.

The vacancy announcement contains a deadline discrepancy that applicants should take seriously.

The General Conditions state that the application deadline is 11 September 2026. However, the “To Apply” section instructs applicants to submit their applications by 14 September 2026.
